Custom Cab Construction
Cab construction is normally from well-seasoned pine boards. These are lightweight, offer good resonant characteristics and are constructed with mechanically superior half-blind dovetail joints using a mixture of traditional and contemporary workshop practices. Baffle boards and back plates use high-grade multi-laminate birch ply. The same approach is used for heads and results in a cabinet that will withstand all seasonal changes and will remain in service for decades.
Custom built cabs follow on from a design process where the type of speaker, and the resonant frequency response of the cab have all been considered and determined. As a rule of thumb, open back designs offer optimum frequency response across the range of the speaker, closed back (ported) designs can help to tighten up the low end and are generally a little more “directional” than open back cabs. Each has its merits and along with the choice of speaker will influence the tone of the amp significantly.
Covering and hardware can be deeply personal choices and so when commissioned to build a cab we will discuss the vast number of choices that are available to you. If you are not bothered about how the rig looks, but instead how it sounds, then a run-of-the-mill black Tolex is always a good choice. Fittings that include corners, trim and handles can also be determined but will never be less than hardwearing and premium quality.
